How to Become a Tattoo Removal Technician in BC
Tattoo removal is one of the few aesthetic services you can build a business on without a provincial licence in BC — but unlicensed does not mean untrained. This guide explains what the work involves, what proper tattoo removal training covers, what it costs, and how to spot a course that will actually prepare you to treat clients safely.
What the job actually involves
A tattoo removal technician spends most of the day on judgement, not just machine time: consulting with clients about what can realistically be removed, checking skin type and medical contraindications, running test spots, choosing wavelengths and settings for each ink colour, treating, and managing aftercare and expectations across a series of sessions spaced weeks apart. Many technicians work inside tattoo studios, medspas or laser clinics; others build their own removal practice. The technical skill is learnable — the safety judgement is what training is really for.
Do you need a licence in BC?
No. British Columbia does not licence laser tattoo removal operators, and there is no government tattoo removal certificate. Provincial certification under BC's Private Training Act applies only to career programs that run 40 or more instructional hours AND charge $4,000 or more in tuition; shorter, focused courses are private training, and the credential you receive is a Certificate of Completion from the provider.
Unlicensed does not mean unregulated, though. Expect to need a municipal business licence where you work, liability insurance (insurers will ask about your training), and to follow local health-authority rules for personal service establishments. Check your municipality and health authority before you sign a lease or buy a machine.
What good tattoo removal training covers
- Laser physics in plain language — how short pulses shatter ink particles and how the body clears them.
- Wavelengths and ink colours — 1064 nm for black ink, 532 nm for red and orange, and the specialist wavelengths (585 nm for light blue, 650 nm for green) that decide whether you can treat multicoloured tattoos or have to turn them away.
- Picosecond vs Q-switched platforms — what the difference means in practice.
- Skin typing and contraindications — the Fitzpatrick scale, tanning, medications, and who should not be treated.
- Laser safety — wavelength-matched protective eyewear, controlled treatment areas, and plume (smoke) management.
- Consultations, consent and test spots — the paperwork and the patch test that protect your clients and you.
- Supervised treatment on live models — real machine time with an experienced technician watching your settings and endpoints, not just theory or practice on synthetic skin.
- Aftercare and complications — healing timelines, and how to recognise and respond to blistering, pigment change and scarring risk.
How long training takes and what it costs in BC
Formats vary widely. Short single-platform certificate classes run about 5 hours (around $1,650 in BC) and cover one device family. The common entry point for tattoo removal specifically is a focused 2-day hands-on course, which currently runs about $1,950 to $2,250 + GST in BC. Broad multi-week laser technician diplomas that bundle hair removal, skin rejuvenation and other platforms can run $7,750 or more — more than most people need if tattoo removal is the goal.
However long the course is, treat your first months of real treatments as part of the training: settings judgement improves with every skin type and ink colour you see, and having your trainer reachable for case questions afterwards is worth asking about before you pay.
How to choose a course
- Do you treat live models, supervised — and are models provided?
- How many wavelengths do you train on? One-wavelength courses limit you to mostly black ink.
- What is the cohort size? Four or fewer trainees means real machine time; a lecture hall does not.
- Who teaches it — a working technician who treats clients now, or a salesperson for a laser company?
- Is the credential described honestly as a Certificate of Completion?
- What are the deposit and rescheduling terms if your plans change?
Red flags
- "Government certified" claims in BC. That credential does not exist for tattoo removal — a provider willing to invent it is telling you something about the rest of the course.
- Online-only training with no live models. You cannot learn skin endpoints from a video.
- No safety module. If eyewear, plume control and contraindications are not in the curriculum, walk away.
- Training bundled with a machine purchase you did not ask for, or pressure pricing that expires today.
