How Many Sessions Does Tattoo Removal Take?
The honest short answer: most professional tattoos take 6–10 sessions for full removal, spaced 6–8 weeks apart — so the whole process usually runs a year or longer. Here is why the range is so wide.
Why it takes multiple sessions
A laser does not erase ink directly. Each pass shatters ink particles into smaller fragments, and your immune system carries those fragments away over the following weeks. Only so much ink can be cleared at a time, and deeper layers only become reachable once the layers above them fade. That biology — not the laser — sets the pace.
Typical session counts
| Tattoo type | Typical sessions to full removal |
|---|---|
| Amateur / stick-and-poke, light black work | 3 – 6 |
| Professional black tattoo | 6 – 10 |
| Professional multicolour tattoo | 8 – 12+ |
| Layered tattoo (cover-up over an older tattoo) | 10 – 15+ |
| Permanent makeup (brows, lip liner) | Often 1 – 5 |
| Fading for a cover-up (not full removal) | 2 – 5 |
These are planning ranges, not promises. Any clinic that guarantees an exact session count before seeing how your skin responds to a first session is guessing.
What changes your number
- Ink colour — black absorbs all laser wavelengths and fades fastest. Red responds well to 532 nm light; greens and light blues are the most stubborn and need dedicated wavelengths.
- Ink density — bold professional linework and packed colour hold far more ink than fine or shaded work.
- Layering — a cover-up means two tattoos' worth of ink in the same skin.
- Age of the tattoo — older tattoos have already faded somewhat and often clear faster.
- Body location — circulation matters. Tattoos on the torso and upper arms clear faster than those on hands, ankles and feet.
- Skin tone and type — darker skin requires more conservative settings to protect surrounding pigment, which can add sessions.
- Your immune system — general health, hydration and not smoking all support clearance. There is no cream or shortcut that replaces this.
- Spacing — sessions 6–8 weeks apart are standard; waiting longer between sessions often produces visibly more fading per session, because clearance continues the whole time.
The Kirby–Desai scale
Some clinics estimate session counts with the Kirby–Desai scale, a published scoring system that adds points for skin type, body location, ink colour, ink amount, scarring and layering to predict the number of treatments. It is a useful reality check when a quote sounds too good: if a clinic promises three sessions for a tattoo that scores as a ten-session case, ask how they arrived at their number.
Setting expectations
Complete removal is achievable for many tattoos, especially black professional work, but some pieces plateau at 90–95% faded — a faint shadow that is barely visible but not literally zero ink. A good clinic will tell you this up front, show you healed results (not right-after-treatment photos, when frosting makes ink look gone), and reassess after your first couple of sessions, when your personal fading rate becomes clear.
