How Much Does Tattoo Removal Cost in Canada?
Most Canadian clinics price laser tattoo removal by the size of the tattoo, per session. Here is what people actually pay, coast to coast — and what makes one tattoo cost three times more than another.
Typical per-session prices
| Tattoo size | Typical per-session price (CAD) |
|---|---|
| Extra small (under 2 inches, simple black work) | $75 – $175 |
| Small (palm-sized, black or light colour) | $125 – $225 |
| Medium (hand-sized) | $175 – $325 |
| Large (half sleeve, large back piece) | $325 – $700+ |
These ranges come from the pricing published by clinics listed in our directory. A minority of clinics break the size model entirely — for example, one Toronto clinic in our directory charges a flat $200 per session at any size. Prices are before tax, and taxes on cosmetic services vary by province.
What drives the price
- Size — the single biggest factor. Laser time scales with area.
- Ink colour — black ink absorbs every wavelength and is the cheapest to treat. Greens, blues and light colours need specific wavelengths and often more sessions.
- Ink density and depth — professional tattoos pack more ink deeper than amateur ones, and layered cover-ups hold roughly double the ink.
- Laser platform — newer picosecond platforms often carry a higher per-session price than older Q-switched systems.
- Clinic type — medical clinics with physician oversight tend to price above dedicated removal studios; chains price differently again.
- Location — downtown Toronto and Vancouver clinics generally price above smaller markets.
Pricing models you will run into
- Per session — simplest to compare; you pay as you go and can stop anytime. Best if your tattoo may fade in fewer sessions than average.
- Prepaid packages — a bundle of sessions at a discount. Ask what happens if you need more sessions than the package includes, and whether leftover sessions are refundable.
- Unlimited / complete-removal packages — one price until the tattoo is gone, common at large chains. Attractive for big, dense pieces; read the fine print on session spacing and time limits.
- Flat-fee per session — rare, but simple: the same price regardless of size.
- Payment plans — many clinics split the total into monthly payments; check for interest or admin fees.
Extras to budget for
Consultations are free at many clinics but not all — ask before booking. Budget for aftercare basics, and note that sessions are usually spaced 6–8 weeks apart, so the total spend stretches over a year or more rather than landing all at once.
How to spend less without cutting corners
- Compare totals, not session prices. A $150 session that takes 12 visits costs more than a $250 session that takes 7.
- Space sessions properly. Your body clears ink between visits; booking too often wastes money without speeding results.
- Consider fading instead of full removal if you plan a cover-up — a few sessions to lighten the old piece is far cheaper than complete removal.
- Get two or three quotes. Bring the same photos and measurements to each consult so you are comparing like with like.
